There are many listings for 1981 Type 2 coins. Somewhere around 75% of them are actually Type 1 coins. Many are under the impression that the Type 2 mintmark is just like the 1979 Type 2 mintmark and that is wrong. If you see listings for "Type 2 not flat S" - it is not a Type 2. If you see listings for a clear S it may not necessarily a Type 2 as not all Type 2s have clear fields. If the listing does not have an enlarged photo of the mintmark or one will not be sent when requested it most likely is a Type 1. Being called the good one or the rare one doesn’t make it the right one.

There is a general lack of knowledge and understanding of this die variety. It is difficult to identify the Type 2 mintmark until you have actually seen, in your hand, the real thing. Once you have seen the real thing you will see the stark difference. Please be careful.
