PAGASUS WINGED HORSE GREEK PERSEUS MYTHOLOGY
When the Greek Gorgon Medusa, whose eyes could
turn men to stone, was killed by Perseus, her blood
mixed with the foam of the sea. From this liquid leapt a
winged horse, Pegasus. He was captured by Bellero-
phon, who was unable to tame Pegasus until the
goddess Athene gave him a magic bridle in a dream.
Bellerophon rode Pegasus to kill the monstrous
Chimaera, with their lions heads and dragon tails. When
he attempted to fly to heaven on horseback, Pegasus
threw him off and flew into the sky alone to become the
constellation of stars that still carries his name.
In the second world war, a pale blue Pegasus on a
maroon ground was adopted as the insignia of the
British Airborne divisions, the paratroops.
